How to make a good College Tennis Recruiting Video?

If you are looking to make a good tennis recruiting video to go to an American College soon, you are on the right page. I made my own successful video and helped people to do theirs.

The first step to be recruited in the US is to produce a video in which, you will show your sport and fitness level to your future coaches. The whole recruiting process starts right here. The better video you have, and the more chances you have to impress the coach and find a good university. However, the video has to represent your actual level.

Composition of your video

Your tennis recruiting video should not be too long and attract the coach from the first minute. The purpose is to show every part of your game. A perfect video would be composed of:

  • An introduction where you say your name, your nationality and your expectations. (1 to 2 minutes)
  • A quick warm-up at the baseline. (1 to 2 minutes)
  • Forehand crosses (1 to 2 minutes)
  • Backhand crosses (1 to 2 minutes)
  • Volleys (1 to 2 minutes)
  • Serves (1 to 2 minutes)
  • Points (2 to 4 minutes)

Therefore the whole video should be from 8 to 15 minutes.

You can add your e-mail address in your video and in the description to facilitate the communication with coaches that only got to know you through this video.

For an example, you can check out my recruiting video, and also look at other player videos if you lack of inspiration. Please be kind, and note that this video was taken a long time ago, when my public speaking skills were at their lowest 😉

You have to show your enthusiasm. Therefore moving your feet is very important to show your intensity and motivation.

What Camera do You need?

For my video, I bought a $50 camera made to record sport actions and I asked some of my teammates to play with me. The camera I used was this one, I bought it on amazon and I found it very easy to use. However, I could not get the best images and the sound was not perfect as well.

Note that the sound isn’t what is the most important when showing your game. Because it can only add more punch in your game in the eyes of the coach, I would advise you to buy this camera if you can afford it and want a better quality. If you struggle buying a camera, you should be able, depending on your country, to go to a specialist, that will let you try for free. It will help you find the perfect fit, but this requires a lot of time buying and trying each cameras. If you already have a camera, try it out and see if the quality is good enough. I also know some player who used the last iPad or modern tablet they already owned.

How to record your video?

Once you bought your camera online or found one at home. You will have to record the video. To make your tennis recruiting video more attractive, you can shoot from different angles. It is important to see the other side of the court where your balls go, and not just yourself. You can, however do one short part with a zoom on you to show your technique from closer.

Wherever you place the camera, it has to be stable to have a good image quality. You can film from behind the court ( I personally set my camera on the referee chair that I moved around), from the side, or from an upper position where people usually stand to watch you play. If you have someone to help you with the shooting part, you can ask them to move around the court holding the camera. To show the volley part, my friend was standing on the ground at the net and then moved around me. I think that it was a really cool thing to do, and to watch as well. I advise you to use these different angles along the video.

The partner you choose to play with is also an important factor. You will have to pick someone that can hit with rhythm, without missing too much. If you are a guy, avoid playing with a female player. You can hit with your coach, or a practice partner for example. I chose my coach because he was the most consistent.

How to edit your video?

Once you bought the camera, recorded the video, you will have to edit it. Don’t worry about buying expansive software that you will only use once. I used the free video editor that was already installed on my laptop, and it worked out perfectly. Several free video-editing software exist such as:

  • Quik was created by the GoPro cameras maker, it is available on IOS and Android. Download Quik
  • iMovie is great but only available for Mac and iPhone user. Download iMovie
  • Openshot is available for Linux, Windows, and Mac. Download Openshot

To enhance your video, you can choose to make a fancy presentation, add some effects if you are good at it. It will show your investment in the project. You can also film yourself during a fitness session. However, the coaches are going to watch a lot of videos, so make sure your video is not too much effects and that it focuses on showing your tennis skills and your motivation. The start of the video is the most important. In comparison, if you read a book, and the start is boring, will you want to keep reading this book until the end? The answer is NO, and because you don’t want them to miss the good parts that may be at the end, you need to interest the coach with a good start.

How to Post and Promote your Video?

Once the video is made, you can post it on YouTube to get more visibility. In order to do so, you have to create a YouTube channel linked to your e-mail address. You will have to send emails to the coaches of the college you want to be in. In each of those email, you will need to include a link of your YouTube recruiting video. If a coach likes your profile and your tennis skills, he will contact you to tell you what he has to offer.

From my experience, after making the video, I shared it with my relatives and my friends to get more visibility. I also mentioned it on Facebook and Instagram to people interested about tennis. I had around 500 views in a week and I could see with the YouTube analytics tools where are the people seeing the video and how much of the video they’ve seen. It was also interesting to see from which state the coaches were looking at it.
